Structural Reinforcement Located by GPRS, LLC

A general contractor was core drilling (6) holes with various diameters in York, PA. Prior to drilling, the structural engineer required minimal reinforcement compromised during the process (particularly the vertical bar). The concrete wall was approximately 10 inches thick with two layers of reinforcement. The contractor reached out to Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC to scan the (6) hole locations. To the client’s surprise, GPRS was able to come out that same day to complete the scanning. For each location, GPRS scanned an 18”x18” area around the proposed hole locations. As opposed to X-ray, Sam used ground penetrating radar to scan the slab and was able to give real time results to the client. He marked out the reinforcing pattern which was approximately 6”x6” in each direction.

GPR is a great tool to locate critical targets in the concrete prior to core drilling or saw cutting. It can assist in keeping projects on schedule by avoiding unforeseen conduit strikes as well as saving money from repairs. In this case, it was able to minimize the damage to the structural integrity of the building. Most importantly, it can support job site safety and keeping fellow workers safe. Please visit www.simspec.org for an overview of our industry-leading best practices that will be applied to this project.

Sam Hart performs GPR scanning to locate reinforcing steel and other critical targets in the concrete. For assistance in the Pennsylvania Mid-State areas contact Sam Hart at sam.hart@gprsinc.com or (717) 798-5721. GPRS can provide rebar locating, post tension locating, location of conduits, underground utility locating, and void detection.

GPRS does not provide geophysical, geological, land surveying or engineering services. If you need such services, please contact an appropriate professional.
